The Return of the Vigster
Midnight. Viggi grasped the rope and hauled her considerable ass up the west-facing wall. Heaving her bulk over the rampart she is immediately faced with a beautiful young woman, beyond whom a man with a staff is seen ascending the stone stair from the courtyard. Behind her Viggi glimpses Burlap in the motion of slamming shut the gatehouse tower door. Turning back to face the young woman, Viggi watches as she shifts form into that of a watery serpent. On any other night, in any other place, and in the company of any other party, Viggi might think that there was something a little odd going on.
Try as she might Viggi couldn’t make a solid connection with the water snake. As the snake slithered away, Viggi made a heroic leap from the top of the of the twenty foot high wall to the courtyard in pursuit. Meanwhile the man with the staff learned that he should never stand with his back to a door. Bort and Kahlan had no qualms about not fighting fair. The man swung around wildly, but he made the mistake of believing that behind him would be adversaries of his own size. His staff met with nothing but fresh air as the halfling and dwarf grinned up at him. A moment later staff-man was felling for his life across the courtyard. Kahlan followed closely behind him.
Furry beasts with big spikey sticks
Staff-man made his escape and entered the door of the north-east tower. Kahlan heard a low guttural growl and a thud. Opening the door just enough to peer in she saw a large beast, almost 7ft tall, standing over the deceased staff-man. The beast held a large spike-studded club dripping with fresh blood. The beast roared and charged the door. Kahlan slammed the door shut but it burst open and she was forced to duck underneath a shower of shattered timbers and splinters as she ran. The first of three enraged beasts exited the tower to give chase. Kahlan ran beyond Bort who was left alone to go toe-to-toe with the enraged beasts. “The bravest dwarf in the North” thought Viggi and Burlap, as they looked across the courtyard to witness Bort standing stoutly and singlehandedly trade blows with two of the big angry furry things. “Ah crap, how did I end up in this mess”, thought Bort. Soon the three ferocious monsters lay dead. And with that the last defenders of the keep melted away into the night leaving the party in possession of the place of slaughter.
Dawn
In dawn’s early light the party cleared away the bodies of the fallen and held a special ceremony for Alfalas and built a cairn over him. Exploration of the keep discovered various treasure (see below) and an interesting letter from an anonymous spy in Red Larch. The spy reports on the movement of caravans (which the denizens of the keep then prey upon) and also warn of the arrival of a bunch of troublemakers (the party). Amongst the discoveries too was a secret door in the great hall behind which was a spiral stair leading down into the darkness.
The Ghouls
At the bottom of the secret stair was a large landing area beside an underground river. Two small boats were moored up. Taking one of the boats, the party had hardly pushed away from the landing before the boat was overturned spilling everybody into the inky black water. Surrounded by ghouls most of the party managed to clamber back up onto the landing. Viggi however had other ideas, lifting at least one ghoul clear of the water and hurling it unceremoniously through the air until it landed right next to a less than impressed Burlap who had just managed to clamber out of the water to escape the foul creatures. By the time the ghouls had been despatched the party was left feeling apprehensive about continuing along the course of the foreboding underground river that leads to who knows where?
