I'm thinking crystal tainted Tiefling Sorcerer (Wild Magic); an evil wizard attempted to replicate the crystals in his sanctum, using tiefling children as subjects for his cruel experiment. The experiment failed, the faux-crystals were destroyed, the wizard killed, but one tiefling child escaped, changed by his exposure to forces man had no business tampering with.

Does that backstory work within the lore of your setting? If not, I will make whatever changes you deem necessary.
