Date and proper names to be added when I get access to them. All my notes were on my char sheet!

Date 06/21/00 - Wednesday

Figured I’d still keep writing down what happens since it will make it easier to write up the AAR if we ever find something resembling a chain of command again.

Operation Reset was a shit show as anyone with half a strategic brain could tell. Too few men covering too big a front with too few Armor and Arti in place to support. Our teams job was to go ahead and mine some of the main roads with AT mines to try and catch out their Tank units as they moved towards the front except of course there weren’t enough mines and the fucking radios didn’t work! We tried telling them that but no one was listening at that point. The OC was delusional thinking it was just a matter of time till things turned in our favor. The wars lost. All we gotta do now is survive till tomorrow.

Anyway things fucked up, squad got wiped out trying to get back and only a few of us did. I’d picked up an injury to my arm making our way back to our side of the line so got sent to a field hospital just outside Kalisz along with what was left of the Red Devils. 5th Infantry Division is barely a regiment anymore. Things got more fucked up when those commie fuckers attacked a fucking hospital mowing down people left and right!

I and a few others managed to get into a Humvee and escape but I lost the rest of my squad. I’m pretty sure I saw Tompkins get mowed down and I’ve no idea what happened to Anderson but I’m not hopeful they were being ruthless. Guess they forgot Geneva existed as well.

We’re in a copse of trees about 10 klicks North now. AS well as myself Doc (Actually Technical Sgt Dwight Quincy but like anyone who knows one end of a morphine syrette from the other everyone jus calls him Doc) got in, He’s a support arms guy been around the block and I’ve worked with him before. There’s also another guy I’m not so familiar with, think they said his name was Kyle Brookheimmer. Hell of a shot though. Went out and caught a bloody boar. Doc had also dragged in a Surgeon. Theoretically a captain (Robinson according to her name tag) but obviously a drafted civvie. She was in a bad way and Doc wanted to try and save her life, insisting she wouldn’t survive if we kept driving off road. Two other guys had piled in but they were clearly wounded and mostly just stayed in the back of the Humvee resting up while I went on stag. I wasn’t happy being static so close to the front but a lot have died already. If we can save one more it might be worth the risk. And, so far, it paid off. Doc worked a miracle and says the actual Doc will make it.

Lots happened but no excuse. I need to get my head back on the game. All the screams from the back of the humvee kept drawing my attention but that’s no excuse I still should’ve heard a bunch of starving fucking civvies approach. It was a bunch of locals after food. Claiming they were from Kalisz and it was now in commie hands. The new guy took pity and gave them most of that boar he caught and pointed them towards a clean stream he’d found. They gave him a broken watch in exchange. We might be able to use some of the parts as It’s gonna be a minute before we get near anything even vaguely resembling a logistics chain.

The doctor was now moveable but it was too late in the day to start driving. None of us where particularly proficient and the other two guys needed a bit more rest so we decided to risk camping out for the night. While playing with his Radio Doc picked up something that, amazingly, seemed like actual fucking orders. It seemed we’re pulling out of the European AO and anyone who can get back to the French coast might (might!) be able to get a ship back stateside. Not that it sounds like there’s fuck all left for us there. Still it’s a direction. You can tell the others haven’t been spec ops recently (or at all) they are all talking about how we get a ship across the channel or from the baltic north. I did my best to focus them. Tomorrow matters. Nothing else. Break it down into stages. Step one. Get across the big fucking river to the west of us. Kalisz is out so we head north. The map shows a road bridge west of Konin. We head there in the morning and get across. Then we worry about the next step. We can turn west and head toward Poznan and get a read on the lay of the land as we go. All that matters for now is getting our little group, and anyone else we come across, through tomorrow. Then the next day. Then the next. I’ll try keep this up to date. If it stops it’s probably because I’m dead or just lost my last fucking pencil.

Woz

Edited to add dates and times. And yes I did the date in US format. Hurt me too. (also yes I'm sad enough to google what day of the week the 21st of June was)

Game Introduction

It is the 21st of June 2000, 06:30 local time. Back in April the rumours of an offensive started coming through. The US and NATO forces heard word of Operation Reset, the first major offensive to be launched by the US military in well over a year. It started well for the US forces and the push towards a devastated polish capital Warsaw took the soviet forces by surprise, but it didn’t last. After a triumphant week of NATO gains, the Soviet military woke up, it reacted and struck back hard. Coordinated assaults of armour and artillery pounded NATO forces and the offensive ground to a halt. The USA led forces desperately moved against the advancing soviets, and with the Soviets more numerous, left both sides battered in a bloody stalemate.

In Poland the US 5th Infantry Division was pushed back and crushed at Kalisz, the survivors fleeing to the woods. The final order is painfully short and to the point: Good luck, you're on your own now..

All of you ended up in a spot 10Kms north of Kalisz, the 212th field surgical hospital, in a small clearing surrounded by woods, dealing with the torn and broken bodies that modern warfare inflicts. The fighting was far away, or so you thought. The rain had stopped and as dawn broke a mist had formed. All members of the hospital unit were soon to find out, war was coming to them.

Sprockets could be heard in the mist. Dr Robinson was outside the operating tent, a five-year veteran and a captain in the US Army, her smocks covered in the blood of those she had operated on. Her eyes revealed that too many had not survived. She had heard the sprockets as a sign that more casualties were being brought in, more bodies for her to try to put back together. Tears pricked the corner of her eyes; it had been almost 48 hours since she’d last slept. Looking for the M113 medical tracks to appear she wiped her eyes and, gathering her strength, stared off into the distance. Her attention was caught by dark shapes as they appeared out of the mist. Terror froze in her eyes as machine gunfire erupted into the silence of the horror unfolding in front of her. The loud crack of a main gun rolled off in the front, the shockwave sending a shimmer through the mist, drew her eyes as the high explosive shell impacted the Bradley armoured fighting vehicle. The turret launching a head of bright orange flame that licked the underside of the vehicle, leaving no chance of survival for those inside. All hell let loose, bullets and tracer rounds came from what seemed like all directions. Explosions shook the trees, tortured screams joining those of the men falling under this terrible barrage. Turning desperately, looking for cover, was when she felt the heat of the hot metal that had entered through a skin of her back, her medical knowledge already calculating the damage it was causing her. She fell to the dirt, her mind continuing to whirl as the shock of being hit, mingled with the confusion of a cacophony of noise, pressure, light and heat that surrounded her. Her hearing dimmed as the final thought crept across her fading mind. This was it, the end.

Dwight Quincy grabs the wounded doctor, throwing her into the back of the M1114 HMMWV. Also in the M1114 were Kyle Brookheimmer and Tom Wozniak . Slamming it into gear, Brookheimmer races the hummer out of the devastation behind you. T72 tanks, BMP armoured fighting vehicles shooting and firing, opening fire on the wounded, shooting anyone that moved. The firing died down as you raced into the darkness.

As morning broke, you found yourself a little bit away from the death and destruction, in a small clearing, taking a break. You find it clear, no sprockets, no gunshots, exhausted, tired and wounded. A few bullet holes in the side of hummer.

You decide to make camp and take stock of the situation. Firing in the distance still goes on. It's quite a way, nothing close by. Exhausted you set up a pattern for the days shifts, sleeping or keeping watch. The doctor injured in the back of the M1114. You know things are bad. This is where the story begins…
