Good spot Mel
just be advised these are shadowrun books based on the game, i.e. fiction novels not adventures or rpg materials... though they do provide some super ideas!

HI Mike
dont panic about it... I suspect that the easy thing will be to roll with it.
the basic mechanic is you form dice pools...
your skill in something, plus relavant dice from a pool vs a target numnber that varies dependent on dificulty circumstance etc.

so you base TN for to shoot someonne within ~9 m would be 4. that gets modifiers up dependent on level of light, presence of smoke, fog, cover etc. (they GM will specify) that increase the number, it then gets modified again by your special abilities e.g. skill with firearms, laser sights, targetting systems thermographic vision etc. that may compensate, so a +2 to TN for darkness would be modified by the ablity to see in the dark, whilst smoke/fog would prevent dark vision but thermographic vision would penetrate it...

Typically you would have target numbers of ~ 3-4 for easy tasks, 5-7 to moderate tasks, 8-10 for hard tasks and 11+ for exceptionally hard tasks. (all rolled on d6 with 6's exploding)

you would roll anything from 4 to 12 dice looking for 'numbers of sucesses' against your target number. more sucesses = better results...

for example.

Evil Bert is an assassin. hes trying to get into positon unseen to take out his latest target. He wants to jump over an electrified fence, and then up the side of a buildiing to hide and wait for his target.
The GM called for an athletics check to jump the fence, its 4m high and has high voltage running through it. the Target number for a 4m veritical jump is determined to be 10 (almost impossible). but Bert has a secret. he has cyberware replacement legs fitted with hydraulic jacks which give him +4 dice to athletics for jumping and double his base vertical jump. The GM rules that this reduces the target number to 6.
Bert rolls 10 dice (four for this general athletics, 4 from the equipment - his legs -and he adds 2 from an athletics pool) and gets, 8, 4, 6, 5, 11, 7, 4, 3, 3, 2, four successes. Bert leaps the fence perfectly and lands silently the other side... Now for the hard part...

Bert then scampers across the dark area and attempts to climb the side of the building. The GM calls for a stealth check (but doesnt give a target number), Bert's begins to suspect there may be a problem...
Bert's stealth is 4, he decides to use 4 dice from his stealth pool and rolls, 3,4,7, 5, 1, 2, 2,1 Figuring he's done enough and focussed on the climb to come, its a big surprise when the alarms go off and the lights come on. Just shows that all the stealth in the world is worth nothing if they know you are coming and have ultrasonic detection systems!
Red Wine should always be opened and allowed to breathe....
