Rotation Number: 4
Ref Name: Garuda
Game System: D&D 5e
Scenario Name: Odyssey of the Dragonlords
New Characters: Yes
No. of Players: 6

Players: Stew, Steve, Sant, Scott, Hugh

I've run this before and now offering it again to a new set of players.

One space available.

There will be some restriction on choice of race, due to (a) setting and (b) making life easier for the GM. I'll post more closer to start of rotation. All classes available. Standard array (or whatever its called) for starting ability scores. Character creation on or before first night.

In addition to usual character creation options, I'll also offer each player the option to take a unique epic background that helps establish characters within the setting. There's nice benefits to this and no drawbacks.

THEME
The Odyssey of the Dragonlords draws inspiration from Greek myths. However, this is no re-telling of Greek legends; this is absolutely D&D, but instead of a medieval backdrop it’s set against a more classical age of bronze and is meant to have that epic feel and purpose of ancient tales.

All equipment from the core rule book remains available; although I’d encourage against choosing post-classical things like a crossbow for instance (unless you really, really want one), as it breaks immersion. Equipment is re-skinned in our imaginations to fit the setting. For instance heavy armour is not a suit of clanking medieval steel but instead is imagined to be bronze chest piece with bracers and greaves. A short or long sword is re-imagined as a leaf-shaped double-edged bronze xiphos, etcetera.

SETTING
The world is Thylea; a great continent surrounded by island-dotted seas. It exists in the same universe as other D&D settings such as the Forgotten Realms but is little known to outsiders, as to arrive in Thylea from outside is to survive a perilous ocean voyage and vicious storms. Few outsiders these days are washed up on Thylea’s shores and none make the return journey to tell of the continent. So most or all of you will be native to Thylea, and I encourage this, but if you really want to be a high-elf from Silverymoon, you can.

THE TITANS
In the beginning there were the Titans: Thylea and her husband, Kentimane the Hundred-Handed. Thylea created the world and it was named in her honour. Kenitmane was the greatest warrior in existence and imposed ruthless order on the world. Together they created the indigenous races—the cyclopes, gygans (giants), centaurs, stygians (tieflings), minotaurs, satyrs, goatlings and more.

Later, still centuries ago, the settler races arrived from outside: humans, elves, dwarfs and halflings. The settler races were subjugated to the titans’ rule.

With time, Thylea and Kentimane withdrew from prominence. Their children, the twin titans, Sydon and Lutheria came to power. Sydon, Lord of Storms, demanded daily sacrifice. Lutheria, Lady of Dreams and Queen of the Dead, was honoured with feasts and libations. The twin titans ruled all the races of Thylea with an iron fist.

THE DRAGONLORDS
And then the Dragonlords came. Mighty mortal warriors mounted upon flying dragons. They waged war upon the titans and their armies to free the peoples of Thylea from tyranny. Some of the Dragonlords pursued the war at sea, captains of mighty warships.

THE FIVE GODS
Many Dragonlords perished during long years of war and they wearied, but new allies and fresh vigour came. The Five Gods arrived to take command of the remnants of the Dragonlord’s armies. Finally, the titans' armies were defeated. The Five forced the titans into a five hundred year truce called the Oath of Peace.

PANTHEON
The five gods are: Kyrah, goddess of music; Mytros, goddess of the dawn; Pythor, god of battle; Vallus, goddess of Wisdom; and Volkan, god of the forge.
If you choose a deity for your character, you can choose any of the five gods listed above, or can be dedicated to all of them equally—as a Cleric of the Five for instance.

THE OATH OF PEACE
Fast forward five centuries to the present day. The Oath of Peace has prevented open warfare with the titans for five hundred years, but now the truce is ending. Mortals have become complacent in their worship of the gods and the power of The Five wanes. Meanwhile, factions dedicated to Sydon and Lutheria are gaining traction. The titans are preparing to wage war anew to reassert their dominance and subjugate the mortal races once more.

The Oracle, Thylea’s most celebrated seer, has had terrible visions of what is to come—portents of conflict, misery and doom. She has called for a band of mortal heroes to thwart the titans, before it is too late.

This of course means you. The gods help us all.
