My opinion is that you would be best served by using savage Worlds and the SW Horror Companion. Possibly going for a more "gritty" style, rasther than risk it getting too "carry on screaming".

I don't think Horror plays to Savage World's strengths at all. Bennies and horror are a poor combination. I think supplements like the horror companion make Savage Worlds passable for players who just MUST use Savage Worlds, but it's a case of making do, as opposed to finding the optimum system.

SW is first and foremost a pulp game, with a strong tactical combat element best played with miniatures. It's a lot of fun with the right settings, but it has it's own strong flavour which will overpower many other settings.

Well actually you said you were interested in running a "Monster Hunter" game. and if that means its a "Buffy" style game then SW is wholly appropriate, and also completely familiar to the club. Of course you can add in fear rules, like in Realms of Cthulhu or Achtung Cthulhu if you want, You can reduce Bennies or adjust damage soak rolls if you want a harsher, grittier environment. After all if you're the GM and it's not a published game setting its actually your responsibility to make the rules. In the end its up to you - that's the joy and pain of bring a GM.

It all depends on the flavour of the game you are trying to create.

For a Buffy type game Savage Worlds may fit best. If you are after more role playing, then it may not be so good. Eomak and I are looking at a homebrew again, I can never seem to find the rules that suit what I want to run, so have done homebrew and to be honest it is kinda fun, back to the point Eomak found this Chaosium where it is free to download. This may suit your needs or not all.

My original point was I tried to run VM as it is supposed to be played, the rotation system does not suit this and nor did my players who wanted to kick the bejesus out of something.

If you want to Run WoD then in my opinion run it, you will get players just be mindful that they will want to beat something to death on a regular basis, at least once every couple of weeks, factor those encounters in and you will have an enjoyable game for everybody.

Ah, I didn't have a Buffy in mind when I was thinking about the game, in which case Savage Worlds would work. I think Monster of the Week would be better suited to Buffy than SW in this case, but SW may get more traction at the club.

There are setting rules that make Savage Worlds a more agreeable engine for horror. Realms of Cthulhu suggests taking away bennies and wild die altogether and has sliders to change physical/mental trauma from pulpy to gritty. The Dark Spiral configuration (gritty/gritty) would be brutal.
