A concise write up of notes
Saturday 14th February 1926 P.M.
Thomas Mountford
Collapsed in Great Hall of British Museum in opening hours. Blood soaked overcoat and loose bandages beneath which are deep open wounds, like large claw marks. Delirious, believes he’s in Bedlam looking for patient Lewis Wayne to confess he took the Eye of Lamashtu. He stole it for 'her’. We later realises ‘her’ is Edith Lewis. Paramedics remove Mountford to Charring Cross Hospital. A .38 revolver in his coat pocket, 2 live rounds and 4 spent rounds.
>Thomas Mountford, retired Det. Sgt ex of Croydon CID; 36 Festive Road, Upper Norwood, Croydon. Member of Croydon & Sutton Cat Fanciers Society.
>>Visited his home. Neat and tidy. Lives alone (evidence of former wife here). Four cats. When leaving, a large cat sits on lawn, looks quizzically at Harry and gives an almost mocking look before disappearing into thin air.
Eye of Lamashtu
Patrick Longton confirms the Eye was stolen from Assyrian Collection of British Museum over a month ago. An opal gem, the colour of which changes as you tilt it and view it. Unknown purpose.
>Lamashtu. A female Mesopotamian demon who kidnaps newborn children and devours them. Daughter of Anu, the sky god. Lamashtu is depicted as a hairy hybrid with the head of a lioness. She has equivalents in other ancient civilisations.
Lewis Wayne
At Bedlam. Lewis Wayne has a new cell. Accomplished artist it seems. Cell is decorated with his paintings – all of cats. Some are quite disturbing. We have the feeling of being watched and the painted cats moving in our peripheral vision. Lewis knows Mountford but his sense of reality makes it hard to question him. He thinks cats are clever. He seems worried they might have followed us. He asks if cats followed Thomas Mountford. He has letters from Mrs Edith Lewis, Chair of the Cat Fanciers Society. She visits Lewis Wayne sometimes. We learn of her address.
Edith Lewis
Described to us as late 50’s, well-spoken and well turned-out. Widow. Address 33 Hermitage Road, Upper Norwood, Croydon. Chair of the Croydon & Sutton Cat Fanciers Society. We suspect Thomas Mountford gave her the Eye of Lamashtu. We suspect, considering Mountford’s wounds, that she may know of, and possibly control, a demon-cat (Lamashtu or an avatar?)
>Called on her house. Housekeeper answers. Mrs Lewis is in London, visiting a friend in hospital. Could Mountford be in danger? Housekeeper is nervous, has ticks and twitches. Grand house but lots of cats scratching walls and furniture and running about.
>>Thomas Mountford is safe and relatively comfortable at Charring Cross Hospital. A nurse confirms a woman matching Edith Lewis’ description visited Mountford during visiting hours earlier in the day.
Croydon Murders
Croydon Advertiser 14 Feb 26, announces ‘Grizzly Find in Croydon Residence’. Three members of one family, Alfred and Enid Connitt and their daughter, all of Field End Road, Croydon, found murdered in their home. Extensive damage inside the property. Neighbours heard terrible screams and crashes. Detective Wiggins of Croydon Constabulary is leading the investigation.
Investigators prepare to attend their dinner invite at Aloysius Delgardo’s house…. …
