Just read Sage advice on the D&D website for July.

I didn't realise that rolling a 1 on an ability check or a saving throw is not an automatic failure. A 1 is an automatic miss for an attack.

I always thought rolling a 1 was an automatic failure no matter what

What about rolling a 20? Does the same rule apply?
