The Oath of Peace
The war between the Titans and the Dragonlords (with their allies—the five gods) ended five centuries ago. An Oath of Peace was forced upon the defeated Titans which was to last for five hundred years. During the time of peace, neither side was allowed to wage war against the other, and the Titans were to cease their oppression of the peoples of the lands of Thylea. But the time of the Oath of Peace is soon ending and The Oracle has prophesised the return of the Titans and the doom of Thylea. The Titans are gathering their power once more. But all hope is not yet lost, for The Oracle has prophesised that a band of heroes will rise up to challenge the Titans. The fate of Thylea lies in their hands. This of course means you. The gods help us all.

The Sour Vintage
You answer a summons—a call for heroes—given by Kyrah, a poet acting as agent of The Oracle. In the Heartlands, you gather at a rustic inn called the Sour Vintage. Kyrah welcomes you and tells of a great boar, corrupted by the titans themselves, that has been sent to punish the locals for not offering sacrifies to the titan, Sydon, Lord of Storms. The titan-touched boar has laid waste to farms and killed many people. If you are truly the heroes of the Oracle’s prophecy you must prove your worth. Kyrah tasks you with slaying the great boar.

The Great Boar
You set out at dawn in the company of Kyrah and two guides. A trail of destruction leads you to the boar’s lair. The boar was truly huge. Two tonnes of muscle and sinew wrapped in a bristly hide that bends and dents the tips of spears and arrows. The boar was ferocious and induced fear in those who beheld it. With a single thrash of its head, its bloodied tusks ripped apart one of your guides and it trampled the other. The fight was tough but you slaughtered the beast. Kyrah rewarded you with a golden arrow each and pronounced you true heroes. You dedicated the sacrifice of the boar to Pythor, God of Battle, and buried the poor guides with coins over their eyes for their journey to the underworld.

Heroes of the Heartlands
You return to the Sour Vintage to receive the adulation of the locals. Next, to learn what you must do to face the titans, you must seek counsel with the Oracle, a centuries-old water nymph named Versi. Next morning you set out towards the mountains. A three day journey whose only event was to see off a troublesome band of goatlings that seemed to delight in mocking Jace.

The Temple of the Oracle
You pass through a series of narrow canyons that vent steam from fissures in the ground. Your skin becomes slick with sweat in the hot and humid atmosphere. The steam has fearful faces in the vapour that whisper unintelligible words. The whole place is eerie and the hairs on the back of your sweat-soaked necks stand on end. Eventually the narrow canyons open into a large cleft in the earth. Opposite you, carved into the very rock itself, is a portico marking the entrance to the Temple of the Oracle.

The Order of Sydon
On the steps of the portico, standing between fluted columns, are several soldiers in gleaming bronze breast plates and bright blue cloaks. The cloaks mark them as soldiers of the Order of Sydon. As the end of the Oath of Peace approaches, temples and their cults dedicated to the titans are becoming more powerful. The Order of Sydon is gaining influence everywhere. People come here to seek the Oracle. But the temple is not easy to get to for most and so visitors are few and far between. There is never a need to have soldiers guarding the entrance. So why are there soldiers at the temple now? More succinctly, what is the Order of Sydon doing here?

The Bad Guys, What you know so far….

The Titans
The original Titans, Thylea and her husband Kentimane the Hundred-Handed, created the land of Thylea and its indigenous races. They stepped back from prominence centuries ago and no longer trouble the world. It is their children, Sydon and his sister-wife Lutheria, who are your enemy.

Sydon, Lord of Storms, controls the weather and the seas. His wrath is legendary. He demands daily sacrifices to his honour should be made by the mortals of Thylea.

Lutheria, Lady of Dreams and Queen of the Dead, holds power over the phenomena of dreams and nightmares, and has dominion over the Underworld. Her servants, predominantly made up of fey races, kidnap mortal children for her experimentations.

The Order of Sydon
The Order is a dangerous cult that is growing in power and influence across Thylea. As the end of the Oath of Peace nears, so the activity of the Order intensifies. Its numbers swell. Its temples gain traction in the cities. Its spies embed themselves in positions of power. Its adherents are attracted from the zealous, the disillusioned and from those that simply fear the return of the titans. Many of the latter, hoping to escape the titans’ wrath, are choosing what they imagine is certain to be the winning side when war comes.

The Order of Sydon
You battle the soldiers of the Order of Sydon to rescue the surviving temple acolytes, including Proteus, the head priest, who tells you a witch holds the Oracle captive in the undercroft below the temple. By the time you defeat Heleka, the blue-skinned witch (*cough*sea-hag*cough*), almost everyone ends up in the underground river. The river itself seems to have a life of its own and swept the overpowered Heleka away, out of your clutches.

The Wisdom of the Oracle
The Oracle, Versi, is most grateful to be freed from her captivity. The titan Sydon had sent Heleka to capture his daughter and bring her to Praxys, his stronghold. Versi, is a daughter of Sydon, but has ever been a friend of the mortal races—much to her father’s disgust. She greets each of you warmly. Her gaze looks deep into each of your eyes and makes you feel vulnerable. She gives each of you a personal revelation and then informs you what must be done next in preparation to confront the titans—three great tasks.

Revelations

To Brontes: “Welcome child of Pythor. The divine blood in your veins sets you apart from any mere mortal. You are destined for great things. Go to Estoria and reconcile yourself to your father and learn what happened to your mother.”

To Sirculo: “When I look at you I see only emptiness. It is as if you do not exist. I know you once resided in Mytros at the head of an important family, until one day you returned home to find your house cold and empty. Your loved ones had disappeared and your friends and neighbours had no recollection of who you are. It is as if your existence has been erased from all memory. My sister, Demetria, possesses something that once belonged to you. Reclaim what is yours and learn how you may yet be reunited with your family.”

To Jace: “By Lutheria’s will, her servants forever focus their attentions upon you. Lutheria knows you by name. She seeks your ending. The reasons for why you draw so much of her ire are hidden from me. If you seek counsel with my corrupted sister, Demetria, at the Mossy Temple in the Old Woods, she may know more of your fated doom.”

To Ellas: “You have returned my Love. And you must promise to return to me again when all is done. I urge you to reclaim your famed armour and the Crown of the Dragonlords from the Tomb of Xander at the Necropolis of Telamok. But beware, for the entrance to the Necropolis is guarded by Damon, an undead gatekeeper of great power. Do not make an enemy of him.”

To Beefy: “Welcome nephew. You are the grandsire of my father, Lord Sydon. In the form of a rampant bull, he seduced your sorceress grandmother, and then killed her when his sister-wife, Lutheria, discovered the affair and insisted on her death. But before her demise she gave birth to a daughter—your mother. Your mother was hidden from Sydon, as you in turn were hidden from your grandfather’s gaze.” The Oracle retrieves a golden locket and chain and pours it into your hand. “This belonged to your grandmother. Treasure it always.”

The Three Great Labours

To prepare to face the titans, three great tasks must be accomplished before you are ready to sail into the three seas. Versi warns that you must not fail in you endeavours, or else the sky will unleash black rain upon the world.

Claim the Weapons of the Dragonlords: The weapons of the first Dragonlords were forged by the god Volkan, and are capable of wounding the Titans. These are located at Telemok, a necropolis in the Mithril Mountains. The tombs were built to house the remains of the Dragonlords. No one ever goes there now, as it is guarded by an undead gatekeeper named Damon, who must be paid with a special coin before he will allow anyone to pass. Proteus, Priest of the temple, gives a burnished dragonlord coin to Ellas and instructs him to keep it safe.

Light the Fires of the Mithril Forge: The silver fires of the lost forge were used by the dwarves to construct the weapons of the gods. It can build powerful magical items or repair ancient magical items that no longer work. The fires will allow you to craft the tools you will need. Kyrah suggests to you that a clan of dwarves who work copper mines near Estoria may know of the Forge’s location. The dwarves frequent the taverns of Estoria.

Drink from the Horn of Balmytria: This dragon horn reputedly has many magical powers. It has the ability to gift visions to those who drink from it. Versi is convinced the visionary powers of the Horn of Balmytria will grant a revelation to you that she cannot see. The horn was last known to be stored in the city reliquary of Estoria.

Journey to Estoria
On the way to the city of Estoria you all share a disturbing dream, in which a sweet voice taunts you while you watch an old man, bound and gagged, slaughtered without mercy. The meaning of the shared nightmare eludes you. As your journey brings you closer to Estoria you notice how parched the earth is, how bare the fields are and how the farms are lacking for livestock. You learn that cattle from miles around is driven daily into Estoria, to be sacrificed to Sydon by his priests. Until Sydon’s hunger is sated he has withheld the rains.

The City of Estoria
The king of Estoria is Pythor, god of war, and notorious womanising drunk. The city is menaced with the shadow of war as bands of centaurs and dark fey creatures encroach upon the nearby woods and hills. The roads to and from are plagued by bandits and monsters. The rising power in the city is held by the Order of Sydon. Soon the Titans will be free from the Oath of Peace and Estoria will be overwhelmed. A few hours after your arrival, while walking the bustling streets of the city, a band of hoplites approaches in royal insignia. Their captain steps forward and offers greetings from the king—he wishes an audience with you.

Brontes
Learned today that Brontes was one if the three cyclopes who were brothers of Zeus. Brontes means thunder. The three cyclopes, Arges, Steropes and Brontes (Brightness, Lightning and Thunder) created Zeus' lightning bolts.

King Pythor
King Pythor’s reputation as a womanising drunk proves well-founded. He’s got woes. Lots of woes. The most pressing woe is that the Order of Sydon has demanded his daughter, the beautiful Princess Anora, should be sacrificed at the next full moon to the glory of Sydon. If she’s not, then the rains will not come and Sydon may not be able to hold back the marauding warbands of fey and centaurs that continue to mass in the woods, too close to the city for comfort.

Family Reunion
Brontes reveals himself to his father. After being convinced of the truth, Pythor is delighted to welcome one of his own, although he’d have preferred it if the one with the pointy ears was his son—the one that showed etiquette, deference, courtesy and wisdom. Pythor remembers all of his many children (so he says). In fact he has a gift. He’s been waiting all these years to give it to Brontes. He staggers across the throne room in search of something (anything) he can offer as a present. Ah. Here. Have this heavy maul. I don’t need it. Take it to Volkan, the town smithy, and he’ll shine it up a bit for you.

Of Heroes and Plans
Well if you’re the heroes Kyrah’s been banging on about, you can save Anora. You ask Pythor what’s the plan? Pythor insists if you’re the heroes then you should formulate a plan. He’s a king. He doesn’t think of plans. Other people do it for him. A eureka moment strikes: You’ll offer another sacrifice in place of the princess. But it must be an important sacrifice. One of equal value (if only you’d have thought about a son of Pythor being equal to his daughter). Something like, errm…ooh how about a medusa? They’re rare and impressive. That’s settled then. All you need to do is find a medusa and offer her/him/it as a sacrifice to Sydon next full moon. That’s eight days away. Sydon’s bound to accept the substitute.

The Blacksmith
Volkan, the smithy, is a dwarf. Like all dwarves he’s grumpy. He grumbles incessantly to himself as much as he talks to other people. What do you want? Standing in his workshop, cluttering the place up. You’re bothering him! The bronze pieces around the shop are absolutely exquisite. You’ve never seen such artisanship. Ever.

Brontes presents the maul. A gift from King Pythor and King Pythor said you’d make it shiny. ‘Oh he did, did he?’ Volkan snatches the maul and weighs it up in his hands. ‘Hmmmn,’ he said.
Volkan displayed no care for his wondrous craftsmanship. In his search for an ingot, he picked things up (breast pieces, bracers, brooches, short blades, ceremonial rods, etc), and carelessly discarded them all with reckless abandon. Unable to find what he’s looking for, he settled upon a sword that must be worth a king’s ransom and casually tossed it into the flames of the forge. ‘That’ll do. I’ll patch it up a bit with that. Come back in a week.’

The Reliquary at the Dragon Shrine
Aesop, the Keeper of the Shrine, is a kind and courteous priest. When you tell him you’re here with the blessing of the king to recover the Horn of Balmytria, Aesop has to confess to a tiny problem. It’s been nicked. Two days ago. He shows you through to the reliquary. Glass has been broken and the alcove it enclosed is empty. Purple stains are splashed liberally about. Wine. Wine with a magical taint that can be traced for four or five miles beyond the city and into the Old Woods. Each time the trail begins to thin out you encounter another liberal splashing of wine. Whatever vessel the wine is in, it just keeps spilling it out.

MORE TO FOLLOW.

The Filthy Teenager
Crashing through the forest comes a terrified, dirt-caked, teenage girl. Closely followed by a band of goatlings. ‘Give us the sweetling. We’re hungry’. The goatlings are sliced and diced. The girl, one of a group of friends from Estoria who came to play in the forest, is too afraid to be sent home and too traumatised to say much of what happened to her or where her friends are now. You allow her to tag along.

The Mossy Temple
You enter a glade with a circle of standing stones beyond which is a temple ruin, overtaken by the forest. Its blocked steps, fluted columns and masonry are strangled by tree roots and covered in moss. The home of Demetria no doubt, the Oracle’s corrupted sister. Inside the temple is dark, decrepit and filled with the rubble of fallen stone and the detritus of dead vegetation. The only illumination to infiltrate the temple are shafts of light piercing the broken sections of roof. The smell of damp earth and stagnant water fills your nostrils. Jace finds in the detritus a beautiful, if broken, bronze shield depicting scenes of Estor Arkelander, the captain of the Dragonlords.

Watch your step
A rectangular bath, filled with black, brackish water fills one room toward the rear of the temple. Beefy’s clumsy hooves kick stones into the pool that causes a gentle ripple. The ripple triggers more ripples and splashes. There’s movement in the pool. A tendril of viscous sludge slips out of the water and winds itself around Beefy’s leg. The tendril burns against his flesh. Axes and arrows strike the tendril which fizzes and smokes before retreating beneath the black water. Time to move on.
