An excerpt from the diary of Pierre Boudon-Noir, hastily written in a shaky hand with sepia toned ink. The text is small, rushed and feverish, feverish like the city of Venice.

Diary of Pierre Boudon-Noir

A wonderful insight into Pierres state of mind, and recent past.

Thanks for spending the time to write this

Friday 25th January 1923 continued…

Clock Tower: The clock tower is tall, at least 80ft high. To reach its summit the steps inside are dangerously narrow. In the clock house itself there is a track upon which are fitted numerous automatons, each taller than a man. They represent Death, an angel, a Turk, a winged lion, a condottiere, an assassin, a dancing lass and rustic lad. Ludwig examines the automatons.

The clock strikes 3.15pm and the track moves. Ludwig goes for a ride. Letty panics having spied a terrible man-like creature with red eyes and raking claws – but it disappears. When the track stops we discover the condottiere is fitted with the leg we seek. Pierre releases it and Ludwig removes it. Ludwig suffers instant pain in his own left leg. The track moves again but now wildly out of control. The automatons move erratically and we are clobbered by the swinging weapons and objects they hold. Ludwig is knocked momentarily unconscious. Cogs and machinery come loose and spin through the air. We rush to make our escape, tumbling down steps before the clockwork explodes in a shower of metal shards.

If the vampire-like creature that Letty witnessed is Death itself, the killer at loose in Venice, we are pleased that it doesn’t pursue us during our escape.

Exit Stage Right with a Left Leg: Once outside we see the caretaker, Nonno, looking up at the tower in dismay. He sees Ludwig carrying the leg. Pierre doesn’t waste time with explanations and knocks Nonno unconscious with a single punch. On the waterfront our taxi-boat has waited. We take a ride back to the hotel. The city is in chaos. Black Shirts have now taken to the streets. We grab our stuff from the hotel and depart immediately for the train station. We make it with half hour to spare before the Orient Express pulls in.

Orient Express: We are settled in to our cabins. We now possess a left arm, left leg and torso of the Sedefkar Simulacrum. We depart Venice at 6.30pm for the short ride to Trieste, where we are due to arrive at 7.45pm. Just enough time for Ludwig to sit down with the Devil’s Similare, the Latin manuscript detailing the Fourth Crusade, and begin to read.... .....
